Meet ID Gunjan Ranka
Gunjan is an interior designer and avid traveller, drawing inspiration from her global explorations to create unique and culturally infused spaces. Her designs blend diverse influences with modern aesthetics, crafting environments that are personal and imaginative. With a passion for exploration, she brings a fresh perspective to each project, merging creativity with a deep appreciation for different materials, textures, and design traditions from around the world.
Eterno : What inspired you to be an Interior Designer?
Gunjan : A longing to do things creatively since childhood brought me to choose interior designing. In this field one needs to be detail oriented, logical and be able to understand the minutest details of your clients. For example, a design for a traveller's den could be totally different than for baby boomers. There are no restrictions in designing with respect to colours, fabrics and styles one can use! I believe nothing is off-limits as long as you use it appropriately, that’s the real fun of interior designing. It gives me freedom and liberty to think and design spaces, breaking boundaries of “The normal”.
Eterno : What innovations are you currently exploring?
Gunjan : As a design enthusiast and nature lover, I am focusing on materials which are sustainable and can be recycled. For example, sheets made up of rice husks from IndoWud. Focus is also on reducing waste by upcycling the existing furniture pieces. We also try to incorporate Biophilic design elements such as plants, sunlight to bridge the gap between interior spaces and nature.
Eterno : As you love travelling, how has travelling influenced your approach in interior designing?
Gunjan : I am someone you will always find taking notes of the décor of the hotel, a restaurant or even the colours and materials used in any region I travel. Being aware while travelling has helped me understand about materials and brought more depth and a broader colour palette to my designs. It also helps in problem solving, as different cultures use various techniques to solve day to day problems. Trust me, I can weave reminiscences of my client's travels into their spaces and that’s something I really love doing.
Eterno : Can you share a favourite travel experience that influenced one of your designs?
Gunjan : I recently visited Udaipur and this city is full of art, to be more precise, Royal Art.
I am doing one of the projects in Mumbai where we are exploring patterns in design with intricate mirror work. Mirror work is a traditional craft from Rajasthan that creates a visually striking, reflective surface, making the space appear larger and brighter. When light falls on it, the effect is beautiful. This project is going to turn out extremely unique and eye-catching.
Eterno : Mountain or Beach person?
Gunjan : Oh, as an avid traveller I love both. If I had to pick one, it will be mountains, because the landscapes keep changing in the entire journey. They bring solitude and peacefulness. The towering peaks, crystal clear lakes and rivers are awe-inspiring and is incredibly rejuvenating and relaxing.
Eterno : How has Mumbai influenced your ID journey?
Gunjan : Started my journey in Mumbai and it holds a special place in my heart. Whatever I am today, it is because of this city. From struggles to success and everything in between, this city has given me all. By leveraging the unique opportunities and resources the city offers, I have gained valuable experiences in both interior designing and content creation which has helped me enhance my skills and establish a place in this city which never really sleeps. The city has its own way of teaching things in life and I am glad that Mumbai happened to me!
Eterno : What is your go to method for de-stressing after work?
Gunjan : A quick something to do is always journalling, doodling and practicing deep breathing exercises. I try to implement my learnings from Vipassana’s 10 days meditation course whenever I am stressed. Other things I love doing are café hopping and traveling to relax myself.
Eterno : Are you a jewellery enthusiast? If yes, what's your go to piece of jewellery?
Gunjan : Oh, I just love wearing jewellery especially rings and ear cuffs with all my formal and informal attires. Be it a site visit or furniture selection day, I wear them all the time because they can be a focal point of any outfit. Sometimes, I also like to wear layered necklaces and bracelets depending on the outfits as they add great dimensions to the overall look.
Eterno : What do you like the most about Eterno?
Gunjan : Eterno’s jewellery are super versatile suitable for both casual and formal outfits. Pieces are beautifully handcrafted and appealing which offers a fresh perspective for people like me who appreciate a modern twist with classic styles.
Thank you!
